On the morning that preceded the arrival of the full moon, Derek woke up with Caleb beside him, and noted immediately the change happening in his mate. The omega was not yet in full heat, but it was starting, slowly, his scent shifting like the shades of a dawning sky. Caleb smelled sweeter and strangely comforting, like the dew that came upon the grass every morning.

Derek wondered what his bondsmate would be like by nightfall, when his heat would have come in full.

Caleb woke up then, stirred by Derek’s minute movements, and he regarded the alpha groggily. “It’s starting,” he mumbled, sounding as if he felt compelled to declare the obvious fact.
